Harry Wilkinson

By First XV Forward Coach, Guy Ford

Harry has decided following his latest knock and having taken advice that it is best to hang up his boots. This has been a tough decision for Wilko, as it is for anyone, but for someone so young and talented with most of his playing days ahead of him it is a decision that shows the maturity and Intelligence that made him the obvious choice a few years ago to be the clubs youngest ever 1st team Captain.

Harry has played for the club through the minis and juniors, was a part of the early days of the 2020 academy alongside the Harry Cravens and Tom Roebucks of this world and has been ever-present in the 1st team since he made his debut in August 2018. He played 93 times for the 1s scoring 110 points (22 tries) and he captained the club between 2021-24.
A couple of real highlight moments were his performance in the mud away at Huddersfield where he was playing a different game to everyone else and Hinckley at Hare Lane a few seasons ago where we stopped their unbeaten run, largely down to Wilko’s performance and I don’t think they have ever really recovered from it.

From a personal perspective, I have gone full circle with Harry. I had the pleasure of first coaching Wilks as a young 15/16 year old, through the Cheshire age groups and England 18s, to playing alongside him and finally to coaching him again. Harry, I firmly believe, is the most talented forward to play for Chester, and I would have loved to see him play for another 10+ years, but sometimes the game can be cruel, and you never know when you have played your last.

He can be very proud of the performances on the pitch but for me - and I know I’m not the only one - the way he conducts himself in training, around the clubhouse and away from the club he is a true club man and someone who all the minis and juniors should aspire to.
He will leave a huge hole to fill in the senior squad and specifically the 1st team but one I know the boys will endeavour to fill individually and as a team.
Harry has pencilled a few words “I’d like to thank every single person involved who has contributed to my development not only as a player, but as a person at this club. Ever since I joined Chester it’s played a huge part in my life and I’ve made friends and memories which I’ll never forget.

It hasn’t been an easy decision to make as I spend plenty of my time at the club but I believe it’s for the best. Although I won’t be playing anymore I will still be around supporting or helping when I can. Thank you everyone, see you soon.”
Well done youth - we are all very proud of you and you have every right to be very proud of yourself.
