Chester’s Hannah Lane plays for Wales

Hannah is the first in the family to really embrace Rugby, her first experience at 14 came from an after-school club at Emrys Ap Iwan in Abergele. She was hooked immediately and joined Abergele U16's as a result.

Age grade rugby for girls in North Wales is early in its development and clubs that have the numbers to play competitive games are few and far between so Hannah was lucky to find Ruthin Ravens. What a change! Turning up to see 20+ girls on the pitch, working on fitness as well as individual skill it was the first time Hannah really started to understand the game. She instantly found role models and set her goals to compete with them and learn from them which she did by giving 110% to every training session, arriving early to practice her 'work-ons' that she'd taken from the coach Mike Evans and taking note of how they played. At 15 she was playing up with U-18's and that gave her some great experience and physicality.

In 2021-22 season Hannah was invited to trials for Sale Sharks where she was the youngest player in the first competitive games that the Sale Sharks CoE had ever played. It was a real eye opener to play at that level against other regional CoE's - the experiences coupled with the opportunity to be trained by some excellent coaches, with the resources to support them was invaluable. It was at Sale that Hannah played along-side some talented Chester girls which meant she had one eye on Chester whilst finishing the season with Ruthin Ravens. Step forward a few months into the 2022-23 season she took the opportunity to join Chester where she instantly felt at home and benefited from some quality coaching in an encouraging environment. She was now playing with Chester, Sale and was old enough to try for RGC to get herself onto the WRU player pathway. During the season she kept links with Ravens, playing touch rugby weekly in Ruthin.

Re-united with her old Ravens coach Mike Evans at RGC, Hannah was fortunate enough to be given an opportunity to learn another aspect of the game by becoming Co-Captain for the backs. As a result of these games she was invited to attend the extended Welsh squad for further development training and assessment with the Welsh coaches along with some of her Chester colleagues that were also playing at RGC.

Until this year she's only dreamed of being a Welsh International, but having attended a number of invitational training events and regional play-offs against other Welsh regions she's been able to realise her dream and put on the Welsh shirt, earning her first cap last weekend in the first U-18's international women's rugby match ever between England and Wales - played where Rugby was invented at the Rugby School.
